What Does a Sample Maker Do?
A sample maker’s job is to build what they’ve been given. Typically, they’ll work from technical drawings, patterns, material specifications, construction details, and a Bill of Materials (BOM). If the documentation is complete, an experienced sample room can produce an excellent prototype.
However, they’re generally not responsible for making major product decisions. Questions like: Is this the right foam density? Will this construction method scale to production? Is this hardware durable enough? Can this fabric actually be sourced? Will this pattern fit different body sizes? — these are usually outside the scope of what a sample maker is hired to solve.
What Does a Development Partner Do?
A development partner works before the first prototype is built. Their role is to reduce uncertainty by solving the countless product decisions that affect whether a prototype — and eventually the final product — will succeed.

If you already have a complete technical package, material specifications, construction details, and factory-ready documentation — you may only need a sample maker.
However, if you’re still asking questions like: Which materials should we use? How should this be constructed? Will this fit properly? Is this manufacturable? Can we reduce cost without sacrificing quality? — you’re still in product development. And that’s exactly where a development partner adds the most value.
